The Center
We are the WMO Barcelona Dust Regional Center. This center manages and coordinates the research activities and operations of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) related to sand and dust storms.
The Center provides access to available dust products and coordinates a network of collaborators (researchers, data providers and users’ communities) in Northern Africa, the Middle East and Europe. The activities of the center focus on facilitating access to the available dust information. The network around the Center promotes scientific collaborations that aim to deepen our understanding of the dust cycle and its variability, along with its impacts on key socio-economic sectors. Additionally, one of the core activities of the Center is to build capacity of end-users with the aim of promoting the use of dust products to address the risks associated with airborne dust.
The WMO Barcelona Dust Regional Center was created in 2007 thanks to the formal agreement of two Spanish institutions: the Meteorological State Agency of Spain (AEMET) and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC).
- AEMET, apart of its National responsibilities to work at the forefront of weather and climate science for protection, prosperity and wellbeing, is the Spanish representative in international and intergovernmental organizations related to the observation, meteorological prediction and the study and modeling of the climate and its evolution, especially the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) and the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).
- BSC is the national supercomputing center in Spain. It specializes in high performance computing (HPC) and manages MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe. The Earth Sciences Department at BSC hosts a long-term mineral dust programme supported by the AXA Research Fund through the AXA Chair on Sand and Dust Storms that combines fundamental research, operational dust forecasting and impact and risk assessment research.
Partners
The partners of the Center include research institutions, universities, international bodies, service providers and user’s communities. They are a fundamental pillar of the success of the Center’s activities.
